An evangelist by the name of R.G. Lee used to preach a noted sermon called “Pay Day, Someday.” I believe this phrase is becoming the mission statement of a new generation of Christians who believe they can choose to sin with impunity because after all, God will forgive them, but there is an element of their sin they refuse to consider. It may be true that we serve a loving God full of mercy and grace, but never lose sight of the fact that He is also a just God who demands payment. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus may have secured our forgiveness once and for all, but never be fooled into thinking that your willful sins as a child of God will be ignored without earthly consequences. Many Christians think that just because they don’t see an immediate lightning bolt that they have somehow avoided punishment, but don’t mistake this delay for a free pass from the consequences of sin. Eli the priest fell for this lie and his payday came fifteen years later when not only he, but both of his sons died. A man after God’s own heart, David was forgiven for his sins, but watched as his family suffered one by one because of his adulterous, deceptive and murderous choices. I write this note to appeal to anyone on the brink of a sinful decision, and pray it’s not too late for them. Whether the sinful decision involves addiction, obsession, lawlessness or even adultery and divorce! Remember that payday will be a coming! Payday will come someday! Please consider all of your decisions to succumb to sin with reverence and toil. The decisions you will make will have a time of judgment that will one day be carried out. As you consider the price of your sins my plea to you as that you will understand the gravity of your decision. Is that next rendezvous with the so-called mister or miss “right” worth it. Is that temporary dose of happiness worth the eternal consequences it may cause in your life or the life of your children? Weigh your decisions carefully because I can assure you before the loving and just God that I serve, Payday will be coming someday for your willful choice to sin! |
